I've had a GR1-21L (formerly GR0) for years. Went through the same questions you are. Ultimately I resolved to make it work with the GR1. The way you resolve the organization issue is by augmenting the bag. * _Use_ the MOLLE on the outside. (Or not, depending on your aesthetic). * If you want a water bottle holder, and want to avoid the "tacticool" moniker, check out [ultralight backpacking water bottle holders.](https://chickentrampergear.com) * For the interior, find a preferred size and style of EDC organizer(s) and other modular pieces. Almost nothing in my bag travels "loose". It is in cubes or organizers. Anything from MagPul pouches, Eagle Creek cubes, Pelican Micro, TomBihn 'stuff'. The key is to NOT get everything being black. Let the EXTERIOR be black...but your INTERIOR can be color coded. The only "black" interior organization I have is my tech pouch, which is what I reach for most. Everything else -- color. > BTW: The GR "wire dopp" isn't the best design for the size. It works in a limited capacity. But you can find a lot better options for the same thing. So I don't lose or forget anything, I additionally have most of the interior organization loosely [daisy chained and s-biners](https://www.niteize.com/product/GearLine.asp) and attached to the interior MOLLE. It is a tip I gathered from somewhere else. This took a day to get used to, but it works great now. The result is I can rip open my bag, take out what I want, and close it all back up in a flash. The only stuff on the exterior is my water bottle, and if I need more interior space, one of my internal items (GR Field Pocket) can be clipped quickly to the external MOLLE. ______ u/Callsign_Chaos since it seem like we're all going for the same thing. Just sharing my solution. I've not found a better "tool for the exterior job" than the GR. **If I want more integrated organization, I'd get a TomBihn Synik.** You _can_ get the TB bags in neutral colors if that's your fancy. TB makes terrific stuff.

Carry-on

(1/4)

I usually use mystery ranch. But had a buddy from the service that swears by these , now I see why, indestructible Feels great on my back with heavy loads and works great as a carry on! Please add one thing. Add a fourth molle strap please. Great bag

Laptop

(1/4)

The protection offered by the frame sheet, padding and false bottom is awesome. My laptop (2020 Macbook Pro 13") doesn't move around at all, despite the sleeve accommodating larger computers, even when the bag is not full.

Commute

Used as a daily driver for school and work; now use it primarily for rucking.

Zipper

(1/2)

The feature that I didn't think would make a difference but has been my favorite is full zip opening. It just makes packing so much easier.

Comfort

(1/2)

I suspect the extra length does the trick. Not quite as comfortable as a GR3, but pretty close. I like the slick look and Made in USA tag. With the bottom PALS webbing Goruck is putting on for me this is going to be about an perfect as it gets

Compartment

Laptop compartment of the GR21 for my 15” MacBook Pro well. The BB 19 only fits a 13”. Additionally I like the L-shape zip design better than the BB linear side zip.

Size

(1/1)

My hope is that this review is helpful for those in a similar situation to me. At 5'10", I'm right on the edge of being able to comfortably wear the 26l GR1. However, after owning both, I can safely say that the 21l is a better fit. For my torso length, it sits sufficiently high to keep it from riding on my belt-line, which is a life saver on longer rucks or even when using for EDC

Hiking

(1/1)

A few years ago I purchased a 20L Rucker to train for backcountry hiking. I loved the bag so much, that it quickly replaced my everyday carry backpack. Not too long ago, though, I reached a point where I no longer wanted to remove my everyday work stuff from the Rucker to get it ready to go on a hike with a ruck plate and water bladder. And so, I decided that I ought to look at getting a new bag for my everyday carry
